ESPN’s WSOP Broadcast Features Team Bodog’s Players
July 30, 2008
Team Bodog player Grant Hinkle and pros David Williams and Justin Bonomo will be featured the next two weeks during ESPN’s final table coverage of the 2008 World Series of Poker*
From the moment the first cards were dealt at the 2008 World Series of Poker* to the final days of the Main Event, Team Bodog enjoyed a terrific run this summer in Las Vegas. And tonight, poker fans will be able to see one of Bodog’s very own capture the ultimate prize, a WSOP* bracelet, when ESPN airs its coverage of Event No. 2 ($1,500 buy-in No Limit Holdem). The two-hour, final table coverage begins at 8 p.m. ET.
During tonight’s ESPN broadcast, viewers will witness Team Bodog player Grant Hinkle, a 27-year-old marketing manager from Kansas City, Mo., bust a talented final table featuring poker legend Chris “Jesus” Ferguson, young gun Theo Tran and tournament ace David Bach. Along with his impressive victory in an event that drew 3,929 players, the largest non-Main Event field in WSOP* history, Hinkle took home a life-changing $831,462.
Hinkle’s early bracelet win proved to be momentous for Team Bodog. Just a day later, the team was back in the spotlight with Bodog pros David Williams and Justin Bonomo seated side by side at the final table for Event No. 4 ($5,000 buy-in Mixed Holdem). With an all-pro final nine, including 2008 WSOP* Player of the Year Erick Lindgren, this will be one to watch when it airs on ESPN on Tuesday, Aug. 5, at 8 p.m. ET.
Like Williams and Bonomo, Team Bodog pros Jean-Robert Bellande and Evelyn Ng also found great success at the tables this summer. In the final tournament before the Main Event, Bellande racked up a second place finish to pocket $173,564 and Ng saw herself cashing in two events this summer including an impressive deep run in the Main Event. All together, Team Bodog pros and qualifiers walked away with a combined total of $1,629,767 in winnings from the World Series in Las Vegas.
“We are extremely proud of our Team Bodog pros and qualifiers for their successes at this year’s World Series,” said Morris Mohawk Gaming Group CEO Alwyn Morris. “The WSOP* has been very good to Bodog players for several years now, including a Main Event win in 2006 and a number of bracelet titles. We expect to see even more success at the WSOP Europe this September and across the globe at WPT, EPT and APT events throughout the year.”
Regardless of how they fared at the tables, no Team Bodog qualifer walked away empty-handed as everyone donning the black and red of Bodog was treated to an unparalleled VIP experience the moment they touched down in Las Vegas. From an exclusive party at The Palms Hardwood Fantasy Suite filled to the rim with Bodog Girls to private helicopter excursions to the Grand Canyon and an adrenaline-filled day at the racetrack driving high-performance Corvettes, Bodog’s WSOP qualifiers experienced Las Vegas like no one else - in total Bodog style.
The World Series in Las Vegas is just one of a number of tournaments held around the world that poker players can win seats to for as little as $1 at Bodog every week. From the Asian Poker Tour in Macau this August, to the WSOP Europe in London this September and WPT events across North America, Bodog’s Player’s Choice packages give winners the chance to compete for millions of dollars while experiencing some of the most exciting and exotic locations in the world as only Team Bodog members do.

Bodog Offering WSOP Final Table Prop Bets
http://beat.bodoglife.com/poker/bodog-offering-wsop-final-table-prop-bets-41856.html
Now that the 2008 WSOP has wrapped up and the “November Nine” are set, the endless debates as to who will win the $9.1 million first-place prize at the two-day final table have begun, and Bodog is giving you a chance to put your money where your mouth is and get in on the action by offering a prop bet on the WSOP final table.
Leading the way at the November final table with 26.2 million in chips is the amatuer poker player from Illinois, Dennis Phillips, and Bodog is giving him 3 to 1 odds that he can take it down. Less than 2 million in chips behind Phillips is Muscovite Ivan Demidov (24.4 million), who is also sitting at 3 to 1 odds as he’s just a pot or two out of the chip lead.
Next up is Canadian poker player Scott Montgomery and his 19.7 million chip stack. Due to his recent final table appearance at the WPT LA Poker Classic and the fact that he is one of the most experienced players at the final table, which unfortunately isn’t saying much, his odds are currently running at 4 to 1. Montgomery is followed by Danish poker player Peter Eastgate, who will start with 18.3 million in chips and odds of 11 to 2 that he can overtake the top three spots to win.
The next two WSOP final tablists have almost identical chip stacks but different experience levels when it comes to poker, leading to slightly different odds on their expected success. Ylon Schwartz only has a 5,000 chip lead over Darus Suharto but the odds for the two are 8 to 1 and 17 to 2, respectively; mainly because Schwartz is a known veteran of the Brooklyn poker scene while Suharto is an unknown player with very limited live poker success, up until now.
Toward the bottom of the posted odds is the most experienced player at the final table, David “Chino” Rheem. Unfortunately, despite his live tournament success, his short chip stack of 10.2 million leaves him with a lot of work to do and a 19 to 2 chance of getting that work done. Below him is Craig Marquis whose odds sit just a little above Chino’s at 10 to 1. The shortest stack at the table is Kelly Kim with 2.6 million and is thus the long shot to win the title at 25 to 1.
The final table will take place at the Rio Hotel and Casino on November 9 with the heads-up match for the $9.1 million first-place prize taking place on November 10. Head over to the Bodog Sportsbook for more details on Bodog’s WSOP final table prop bet.
6 PokerStars Players at WSOP MAIN EVENT Final Table
July 17, 2008
POKERSTARS MILLION DOLLAR MEN DOMINATE THE 2008 WSOP MAIN EVENT FINAL TABLE
Six PokerStars players have made it to the final table of the 2008 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event. Out of a 6,844-strong starting field, each of the nine final table players are guaranteed a significant pay day when they return to Las Vegas on November 9 to conclude the Main Event.
The “PokerStars Million Dollar Men” consist of six PokerStars players who will take part in the final-table battle as they vie for the top prize:
Dennis Phillips, 53 from Missouri, USA; has been one of the chip leaders throughout the last few days of the Main Event. He is the current chip leader with 26,295,000 chips.
Ivan Demidov, 27 from Moscow, Russia; has had a phenomenal event with this year’s WSOP, his first major live tournament. He is in second position with 24,400,000 chips. If he walks away with the title, Ivan will become the first Russian to win the WSOP Main Event.
Peter Eastgate, 22 from Odense, Denmark; a fearless and unpredictable player, Peter ranks as one of the top five online pros in Denmark. He enters the final table with 18,375,000 chips.
Ylon Schwarz, 38, New York, USA; no stranger to WSOP tournaments, Ylon has had 11 cashes in WSOP events since 2005. He enters the final table with 12,525,000 chips.
Darus “Dennis_TO” Suharto, 39, Ontario, Canada; won a satellite tournament on PokerStars and progressed through two levels of online tournaments to win his seat in the WSOP. He enters the final table with 12,520,000 chips.
David “Chino” Rheem, 28 from Californian, USA; has had five WSOP cashes in the last three years and has been among the chip leaders throughout the Main Event. He enters “The Final Nine” with 10,230,000 chips.
In the 39-year history of the WSOP, this year marks a change as play at the final table breaks until November’s conclusion. Joe Hachem, Team PokerStars Pro and 2005 WSOP Champion said, “This is how poker should be, and the lives of the PokerStars Million Dollar Men are about to change. It’s going to be
a great ride, as we now start a 117-day countdown to the conclusion of what can only be described as an epic poker journey. I’m looking forward to getting to know these six players better and helping PokerStars earn another WSOP championship.”
“The break in play will make for a different dynamic at the final table, build more excitement for the sport, and allow the public to better understand the personalities of the players,” said Chris Moneymaker, Team
PokerStars Pro and 2003 WSOP Champion. “The benefit to the PokerStars Million Dollar Men of being with us is that these 6 players have the support, skill and knowledge of Team PokerStars behind them, a team already featuring 3 World Series Main Event Champions. I think we have a great chance to bring the WSOP title back to PokerStars for another year.”
Over 1,000 PokerStars qualifiers competed in this year’s 39th World Series Main Event and 123 of these PokerStars players have cashed at this year’s event - winning more than $9 million between them. There is another $32.6 million up for grabs in November, and with six of the final nine playing for
PokerStars, and competing for the remaining $32.6 million in prize money, that total is set to rise.
Among Team PokerStars Pro, Daniel ‘Kid Poker’ Negreanu won his fourth WSOP bracelet in the Limit Hold’em Event, cashing $204,874. Poker legend Barry Greenstein won his third WSOP bracelet in the Seven Card Razz Event, and Italian poker pro Dario Minieri dubbed “Super Dario” recorded his first
major live poker win and took home the WSOP bracelet in the No-Limit Hold’em Six-Handed event.
Daniel Negreanu said, “I would have loved to go further in the Main Event, but regardless, it has been a very exciting WSOP - not just for me, but the rest of Team PokerStars, and for thousands of players from around the world who won their entry to the Main Event on PokerStars. As in previous years,
we’ve had an incredible series.”
In 2008 over 2000 players qualified through PokerStars satellites and tournaments to win their $10,000 buy-in to the Main Event, plus spending money and luxury hotel accommodation.
The final table will be broadcast on November 11th, from 9pm on ESPN

2008 WSOP MAIN EVENT, The Final Table is Set And Ready For November
July 15, 2008
After 12 days of grueling Main Event competition at the record-setting 39th annual World Series of Poker Presented by Milwaukee’s Best Light, the stage is finally set for the most prestigious night in poker history.
For the first time ever, play at a World Series of Poker tournament has been suspended prior to a champion being crowned. The unique event structure calls for the final nine of 6,844 competitors in the $10,000 No-Limit Texas Hold’em World Championship to return to the Rio® All-Suite Hotel and Casino on November 9 to begin the battle for the Main Event title and the top prize of $9.1 million.
Dubbed “The November Nine,” the participants will have 117 days before they return to Las Vegas, where they will vie for the title on what is literally poker’s largest stage – inside the Rio’s state-of-the-art, 1,500-seat Penn & Teller Theater.
In descending order of chip count, The November Nine are:
• DENNIS PHILLIPS, 53, St. Louis, Missouri, 26,295,000
• IVAN DEMIDOV, 27, Moscow, Russia, 24,400,000
• SCOTT MONTGOMERY, 26, Perth, Ontario, Canada, 19,690,000
• PETER EASTGATE, 22, Odense, Denmark, 18,375,000
• YLON SCHWARTZ, 38, Brooklyn, New York, 12,525,000
• DARUS SUHARTO, 39, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, 12,520,000
• DAVID RHEEM, 28, Los Angeles, California, 10,230,000
• CRAIG MARQUIS, 23, Arlington, Texas, 10,210,000
• KELLY KIM, 31, Whittier, California, 2,620,000
The nine will play down to two on Nov. 9; the final two competitors will then go heads up beginning at 10 p.m. PDT on Nov. 10, with the winner expected to be crowned in the early morning hours of November 11. In a World Series of Poker first, ESPN will carry same-day coverage of the victory beginning at 9 p.m. EST on Nov. 11.
The November Nine outlasted a massive field of 6,844 who entered the $10,000 No-Limit Texas Hold’em World Championship. This year’s total Main Event prize pool is $64,333,600. A total of 666 players will cash in the event; payout for 666th place was $21,230.
The final nine will play for a total of $32,633,446, with the following pay schedule:
1st Place: $9,119,517 4th Place: $3,763,515 7th Place: $1,769,174
2nd Place: $5,790,024 5th Place: $3,088,012 8th Place: $1,286,672
3rd Place: $4,503,352 6th Place: $2,412,510 9th Place: $900,670
“The winner of the World Series of Poker Main Event has always become an instant celebrity,” said World Series of Poker Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack. “This year, all nine players who make the final table will become household names – and are guaranteed life-changing prize money to go with their fame and place in poker history.”
ESPN will air a one-hour special on the final nine participants Tuesday, Nov. 4 at 9 p.m. EST. The network’s high-definition coverage of the Main Event begins Tuesday, Sept. 2 at 9 p.m. EST; two-hour episodes will run each Tuesday until the Nov. 11 finale.
The 39th annual World Series of Poker was the largest and richest in history, attracting 58,720 competitors in its 55 events – an increase of 4,432, or 8 percent, over the previous record established in 2007. The total prize pool at this year’s World Series of Poker was $180,676,248, an increase of $20,880,030 over the previous record, also established last year. Players from a record 118 countries participated in this year’s tournaments, more than in the most recent Winter Olympics. That number is up 36 percent from the previous record of 87 countries set in 2007.
The 39th annual World Series of Poker, a compilation of 55 tournaments covering all of the game’s major variations, began May 30 at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. The Main Event, with four start dates to accommodate its large playing field, began on July 3.

Tournament Notes from Day Six:
· Ten days ago, the World Series of Poker Main Event began on Thursday, July 3rd, 2008. The official Day Six was played on Sunday, July 13th.
· This is the 46th of a 47-day span which comprises the vast majority of the 2008 WSOP schedule (not including WSOP-Europe, which takes place September 19th through October 2nd and the Main Event final table to be played November 9-10).
· Day Six began with the “Shuffle Up and Deal” announcement at 12:15 pm PST.
· The number of players who started Day Six was 79.
· ESPN designated two “feature” tables. However, all tables remaining on the tournament floor were given intensive coverage. Every all-in situation was filmed and recorded for possible airing. The table on the main stage started with 11-time WSOP gold bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth. The secondary feature table was located off to the side and included three of the biggest stacks in the tournament when the day started – Mark Ketteringham (Los Angles, CA), Jeremy Joseph (Buffalo, NY), and Brandon Cantu (Las Vegas, NV).
· All seat assignments and re-draws at the WSOP are completely random. However, ESPN selects “feature” tables each day, which are presumably tables with the greatest public interest. Those two tables are then transferred to the main and secondary stages.
· The average stack at the start of the day was 1,732,000 in chips.
· The average stack at the end of the day is 5,070,000 in chips.
· 1989 world champion Phil Hellmuth was the only former Main Event winner still alive when Day Six began. However, he was eliminated late in the afternoon and finished in 45th place. This marked Hellmuth’s highest championship finish since 2003, when he took 27th place that year. This marked his sixth in-the-money finish in the world championship.
· The number of players remaining of the initial 79 players who started on Day Six is 27. This means only 34 percent of the field survived from the start of the day.
· The chip leader coming into the start of Day Five was Jeremy Joseph (Buffalo, NY). He was eliminated on this day and ended up as the 56th-place finisher.
· The chip leader coming into the start of Day Six was Mark Ketteringham (Los Angeles, CA). He was eliminated on this day and finished in 52nd place.
· The chip leader at the start of Day Seven is Dennis Phillips (St. Louis, MO). He is one of only two players in the tournament with greater than 10,000,000 in chips. Phillips’ chip count is currently 11,910,000.
· Craig Marquis is currently in second place with 11,460,000.
· Brandon Cantu was the first player to cross the 10,000,000 mark in chips. However, he lost back some of his stack towards the end of the day and currently sits in 14th place.
· Day Six started with only two female players still alive in the tournament. Lisa Parsons (Franklin, TN) was eliminated and finished in 76th place. Tiffany Michelle (Los Angeles, CA) remains very much alive and is currently third in the chip count, with 9,755,000. It is estimated that 209 female players participated in the 2008 WSOP Main Event.
· Tiffany Michelle appears primed to be the highest female finisher in the Main Event since Annie Duke’s 10th-place showing in 2000. The year before, Susie Isaacs also finished in 10th place. The best finish ever by a woman in the WSOP Main Event was by Barbara Enright, who finished 5th in 1995.
· In previous years, Tiffany Michelle worked as a media representative covering the WSOP for various outlets. Last year, Michelle was the on-camera poker hostess for PokerNews.com.
· Former WSOP gold bracelet winners who were eliminated on this day included – Thomas “Thunder” Keller, Phil Hellmuth, and Mike Matusow.
· Only two former WSOP gold bracelet winners are still in contention. This very short list includes – Phi Nguyen and Brandon Cantu.
· All players who started play on Day Five were guaranteed at least $77,200 in prize money. All players who begin Day Six are now guaranteed at least $257,334.
· WSOP Academy instructor Alex Outhred played on this day. He ended up finishing in 54th place.
· James McManus, from Dublin, Ireland was the 70th-place finisher. It should be noted this is not the same Jim McManus who wrote “Positively Fifth Street.”
· Tim Loecke, from Highland Park, IL appears to be this year’s “Chris Moneymaker.” He is still alive in the tournament, currently in 23rd place. Most interesting is the fact that this is Loecke’s first-ever live poker tournament. He qualified to play in this event by winning a $63 satellite.
· There are seven different nations represented among the Day Six survivors. Nations still alive with players include: United States (19), Canada (2), Denmark (2), England (1), Romania (1), Russia (1), and Sweden (1).
· There are eight non-American players out of the remaining 27 in the field, which means 30 percent of the players still in contention are international players.
· Players from several nations were represented in the top 100 of the Main Event for the first time ever. Brazil enjoyed its highest world championship finish ever as Rafael Caiaffa, from Belo Horizonte, Brazil took 55th place.
· Venezuela enjoyed its highest world championship finish ever in this event as Jamal Kunbuz from Valencia, Venezuela cashed on Day Six.
· Romania enjoyed its highest world championship finish ever in this event as Cristian Dragomir, from Bucharest, was eliminated in 29th place. Romania still has another player alive in the Main Event as Judet Toni Cristian currently ranks tenth in chips.
· One of the most interesting rags-to-riches stories of the Main Event was the success of Alfredo Fernandez, from Miami, FL. He qualified to play in the WSOP via a mega-satellite tournament series at the website www.games.com, which is owned by America Online (AOL). Fernandez entered a free online tournament series, which was played over several weeks. In fact, he defeated 2,396 other players and won his $10,000 entry into this year’s Main Event. Fernandez made it all the way to 51st place, which paid $135,100 in prize money.
· Play was suspended about midway through Level 28. Day Six concluded at 11:45 pm PST.
· Day Seven begins Monday, July 13th at 12:00 noon.
· This is one of the youngest final-27 fields in WSOP history. The youngest player remaining is 21. The oldest player remaining is 53. The average age of the surviving players is 29. Eighteen of the final 27 (two-thirds) are in their 20s.
· There are three players of the final 27 who are of Korean decent – Albert Kim, Kelly Kim, and David Rheem.

· When play resumes on Day Seven, Level 28 will continue with blinds set at 40,000-80,000 and antes at 10,000.
· An interesting side note: The tournament has now reached the point where a single ante represents half of a player buy-in for the Main Event. Players started with 20,000 in chips. Antes are now 10,000.
· Seats are re-drawn at the point at which 27 players are reached, 18 players are reached, and 10 players are reached (once all ten players are positioned at one table). However, only the last nine players constitute the official “final table.”
· Day Seven is scheduled to play down to the final nine players. This means play will end at the point when the tenth-place finisher has been determined.
· Players who have made it to the final 27 have now played a total of 55 tournament hours, not counting breaks or end of day recesses.
· The players who survive Day Seven have been designated as the “November Nine.” The nine finalists will come back to Las Vegas to compete for the world championship in November.
· This is the largest World Series of Poker in history. A grand total of 58,720 players entered into 55 gold bracelet events surpassed last year’s number of entries, which was 54,288. These figures represent an 8 percent increase over 2007.
· This was the richest World Series of Poker in history. A grand total of $180,676,248 in prize money awarded in 2008 makes this the richest event in all of sports. Note: This figure does not include the upcoming four events to be played at WSOP-Europe. These figures represent an increase of 13 percent over 2007.
· This ranks as the second-largest live poker tournament in history. This year’s turnout surpassed 2007 attendance (6,358) by 7.4 percent. Only the 2006 WSOP Main Event was larger than this tournament — with 8,773 entrants.
· This is the second-largest tournament prize pool in history. The total prize pool amounts to $64,333,600. The top 666 finishers will collect prize money.
· There were at least 118 different nations and territories represented by all players who entered the 2008 Main Event. By contrast, there were 87 different countries present last year. This represents a 36 percent increase in international participation.
· The 2008 WSOP Main Event winner will collect $9,119,517 in prize money. The minimum payout is $21,230.
Hellmuth Lives Up To Poker Brat Moniker, WSOP Responds
July 13, 2008
The 39th annual World Series of Poker Main Event is winding down. Last night ended the 9th day of action (although it was officially “Day 5″) and there were still some pros in the field. Most notably, Mike “the Mouth” Matusow, Brandon Cantu, Victor Ramdin and of course Phil Hellmuth.
Hellmuth lived up to his nickname of “The Poker Brat” on Saturday night by excessively berating a fellow player. This is against WSOP’s rules and Hellmuth was issued a one-round penalty of sitting out the first nine hands on Sunday’s Day 6.
Hellmuth, who made another grand entrance this year, got out of his punishment though after a meeting with WSOP officials. Here is the official response from the WSOP today:
This morning Phil Hellmuth met with Jack Effel, WSOP Tournament Director, Howard Greenbaum, Harrah’s Regional Vice President for Specialty Gaming, and Jeffrey Pollack, Commissioner of the WSOP. Based on that meeting and an official review of the situation, it was decided that the penalty imposed on Mr. Hellmuth at the conclusion of play last night was excessive.
“Warnings and penalties are intended to correct inappropriate behavior and our rulings should be as fair as possible, given the circumstances,” said Pollack. “In this instance, the punishment did not fit the crime.”
“Phil has now been warned and put on notice in a way that he never has been,” Pollack added.

Tournament Notes from Day Five:
· Nine days ago, the World Series of Poker Main Event began on Thursday, July 3rd, 2008. The official Day Five was played on Saturday, July 12th.
· This is the 45th of a 47-day span which comprises the vast majority of the 2008 WSOP schedule (not including WSOP-Europe, which takes place September 19th through October 2nd and the Main Event final table to be played November 9-10).
· Day Five began with the “Shuffle Up and Deal” announcement at 12:10 pm PST. The night before, tournament play had been suspended earlier than expected. Therefore, Day Five began with 38:47 remaining in Level 19 (5,000-10,000 blinds with a 1,000 ante).
· The number of players who started Day Five was 189.
· ESPN designated two “feature” tables. The table on the main stage included three-time WSOP gold bracelet winner Mike Matusow. The secondary feature table was located off to the side and included five-time WSOP gold bracelet winner Allen Cunningham. Tables were changed multiple times during the day.
· All seat assignments and re-draws at the WSOP are completely random. However, ESPN selects “feature” tables each day, which are presumably tables with the greatest public interest. Those two tables are then transferred to the main and secondary stages.
· The average stack at the start of the day was 760,000 in chips.
· The average stack at the end of the day is 1,732,000 in chips.
· Phil Hellmuth was the only former WSOP Main Event champion to continue play on Day Five. He also survived the day. He currently ranks in 66th place, with 721,000 in chips.
· The number of players remaining out of the initial 189 players who started on Day Five is 79. This means only 42 percent of the field survived from the start of the day. Less than 2 percent of the field remains among those who started this tournament.
· The chip leader coming into the start of Day Four was Jeremy Joseph (Buffalo, NY). He is now ranked ninth in chips, with 3,100,000.
· The first player to cross the 5,000,000-chip mark was Mark Ketteringham (Los Angeles, CA). He currently ranks as the End of Day Five chip leader, with 5,800,000.
· Nikolay Losev (Moscow, Russia) is in second place with 4,058,000.
· Day Five started with five female players still alive in the tournament. Three were eliminated over the next 11 hours and 40 minutes. As Day Six begins, there are still two female players remaining in the Main Event. They are — Tiffany Michelle (Los Angeles, CA) currently in 4th place, and Lisa Parsons (Franklin, TN) in 71st place. It is estimated that 209 female players participated in the 2008 WSOP Main Event.
· Former WSOP gold bracelet winners who were eliminated on this day included – Hoyt Corkins, Jon Friedberg, Allen Cunningham, Jeff Madsen, and Mark Vos.
· Mark Vos was eliminated on the final hand of the night.
· Only five former WSOP gold bracelet winners are still in contention. This short list includes – Phi Nguyen, Brandon Cantu, Phil Hellmuth, Mike Matusow, and Thomas “Thunder” Keller.
· All players who started play on Day Five were guaranteed at least $38,600 in prize money. All players who begin Day Six are now guaranteed at least $77,200.
· Coming into this year’s WSOP, the current longest streak of cashes in the Main Event was held by Theodore Park – with three. He cashed again this year, finishing in 284th place. Park now has four consecutive cashes in the Main Event – the longest current streak of anyone.
· Andrew Brooks (Catonsville, MD) is severely short stacked entering Day Six. However, Brooks has now cashed in three consecutive WSOP Main Events.
· WSOP Academy instructor Alex Outhred played on this day. He survived and currently ranks 67th in the chip count.
· On the final hand of Day Five, Phil Hellmuth was given a one round penalty by the Tournament Director. He violated a WSOP rule which forbids berating another player. Following a verbal warning, Hellmuth continued to criticize his opponent following a major confrontation. Accordingly, he was penalized for breaking the rule. Hellmuth will be forced to sit out the first nine hands of play on Day Six.
· There are 12 different nations represented among the Day Five survivors. Nations still alive with players include: Australia, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, England, Germany, Ireland, Romania, Russia, Sweden, Venezuela, and the United States.
· There are 19 non-American players out of the remaining 79 in the field, which means 24 percent of the players still in contention are international players.
· Players from several nations are represented in the top 100 of the Main Event for the first time ever. This list of new countries to the WSOP family of nations includes Romania (with two players still alive), Venezuela, and Brazil (with one player each).
· Perhaps the greatest rags-to-riches story of the Main Event thus far is the skyrocketing success of Alfredo Fernandez. Incredibly, Fernandez now ranks 10th in the chip count.
· Play was suspended after the completion of Level 23. Day Five concluded at 11:40 pm PST.
· Day Six begins Sunday, July 13th at 12:00 noon.
· When play resumes on Day Six, Level 24 will begin with blinds set at 15,000-30,000 and antes at 4,000.
· Day Six is scheduled to play down to the final 27 players. This means play will end at the point three tables are reached.
· An interesting bit of trivia: The player who has outlasted more competitors in the main event than any other player over the last two years is – Hevad Khan. Khan has cashed twice and outlasted 12,974 players in the 2007 and 2008 Main Events combined, which is more than any player in that time span.
· More trivia: Only one female player has ever cashed in the Main Event in consecutive years. Veronica Dabul finished 235th this year, and 314th last year, which makes her the only female to accomplish this feat in the 39-year history if the WSOP.
· All players began this tournament with 20,000 in chips. The breakdown of denominations on Day One meant that each player began with 29 separate chips. Now, most players have hundreds of chips in their stacks. The denominations in play now range from 1,000 up to 25,000. Once the final table is reached, a new 250,000 chip will be introduced into play for the first time ever. Incredibly, each of these chips will represent 12.5 total buy-ins, or $130,000 out of the prize pool. Note: The official WSOP website made the astute observation that if there were no chip color ups in this tournament, the average player would have about 2,500 total chips in each stack, enough to completely engulf every poker table remaining in play.
· This is the largest World Series of Poker in history. A grand total of 58,720 players entered into 5 5 gold bracelet events surpassed last year’s number of entries, which was 54,288.

June 4-6, 2008
“IMPDI for the 2008 WSOP”
Tournament Notes:
· The $2,000 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em championship attracted 1,592 entrants. This was an increase over last year’s tournament size, which had 1,531 entries. The total prize pool amounted to $2,897,440. The top 153 finishers collected prize money.
· The tournament was played over three days. On Day Three, the final table was dealt out on the ESPN stage, also known as the “feature table.” The so-called “secondary” final table, located adjacent to the main stage area, featured the conclusion of Event #8 in a scheduling overlap. This year, most days at the WSOP will include two final tables.
· The World Series of Poker consistently draws the most diverse fields in the game, attracting players from all over the world. This event included players who cashed from Australia, Canada, Indonesia, England, Romania, Norway, Scotland, Holland, and Russia, and the United States. Furthermore, players cashed from 34 different U.S. states.
· Five different nations were represented at the final table – including Canada, England, Indonesia, Romania, and the United States.
· When the final table began, Theo Tran was the chip leader. In fact, he possessed nearly twice as many chips as the player in second place. Despite this, Tran ended up as the fourth-place finisher. Tran has developed a well-deserved reputation as a fearless No-Limit player. He dominated play during much of the tournament. However, Tran steamed off his entire stack late at the final table when he went to the felt in less than a dozen hands after having nearly 60 percent of the total chips in play.
· The $2,000 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em champion is Matt Keikoan. He is a 40-year-old professional poker player from San Rafael, CA. Keikoan worked as a “poker prop” for about eight years before phasing gradually into the life of a working poker pro. Keikoan started out playing at Casino San Pablo in the San Francisco Bay area.
