Borgata Poker Open Championship Event Kicks Off With $5 Million Guarantee

September 17, 2008

Record breaking tournament begins events to crown a WPT Poker Open champion.

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ - The 2008 Borgata Poker Open - World Poker Tour Championship event began on Sunday, drawing a field of 516 players with the guarantee of a $5 million prize pool, the largest guarantee by a casino in poker history.

A number of poker’s elite players came out to try and become the 2008 champion, including Player-of-the-Year candidates John Phan and Eric Seidel. Big name poker pros such as David “The Dragon” Pham, Jamie Gold, Gavin Smith, Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi, Roy Winston, Chad Brown, Kathy Liebert, Jon Juanda, Carlos Mortenson and Nam Le all showed up to play in the Borgata Poker Open Main Event on Sunday. Also participating were Dennis Phillips, Ylon Schwartz, and Chino Rheem, all three “final nine” participants for this year’s WSOP event in November.

Professional live players were not the only group represented, as top online pros including Jarde “The WacoKidd” Hamby, Cliff “JohnnyBax” Josephy, Eric “E-Fro” Froelich, Robert “Action Bob” Hwang, Jimmy “Gobboboy” Fricke and Joey “JoeytheB” Brooks took time away from their computers to shoot for the grand prize.

According to Brooks, he has been waiting for this tournament all year. “You always want to do well in the preliminary tournaments, but this is the one that really counts. This kind of first-place money can really help change your life.”

According to WPT lead reporter BJ Nemeth, Borgata’s guarantee once again sets Borgata apart from other stops on the tour. “Despite competing against major tournaments both online and in Europe, Borgata guaranteed a full $5 million prize pool with the WPT Borgata Poker Open Championship Event. That’s the largest guarantee in history, and a lot of critics didn’t think they would get nearly enough players to reach it. When registration closed for the event, the field was only five short of reaching the guarantee. In the end, Borgata added $46,400 to the prize pool and this gives players the advantage of extra equity in the tournament. It’s a win-win situation,” Nemeth said.

Although only one player can take home the title, 54 spots will make the money. Make sure to go to www.theborgata.com to keep up with all of the action on the Poker Blog as Borgata’s team of reporters bring you the action from the Event Center floor. Jack Binion and Doyle Brunson To Shuffle Up And Deal At Asian Poker Tour

August 26, 2008

The excitement is building ahead of the second leg of the 2008 Asian Poker Tour in Macau. The event is being held at the bustling Galaxy StarWorld Hotel and Casino, running from August 27 to 31, 2008. The first card of the Main Event will be dealt at 2.30pm on Thursday 28th after a welcome reception and satellites tournaments tomorrow. The latest development sees a surprise visit by the legendary Jack Binion, host of the first World Series of Poker® at the Horseshoe in 1970. Binion and ‘Godfather of Poker’ Doyle Brunson are going to join tournament director Matt Savage to call ‘Shuffle Up and Deal” to open the prestigious event.

This afternoon Doyle Brunson took part in a book signing, and, after lines and lines of people queued around the block to meet the legend, he was in no doubt about the significance of his visit.

Brunson said: “I have been to so many tournaments and so many places in the world but I have to say I am so impressed with The Asian Poker Tour and Macau. This is the first time I have been here.”

“I thought Las Vegas was the gambling capital of the world but I was wrong, it feels like coming home.”

Member of the “November Nine” on the final table of the 2008 WSOP®, Michael ‘Chino’ Rheem, is playing the APT Macau and he joins a formidable line-up of champions and legends taking part. Chinese-born 10 time WSOP® bracelet winner and ‘Rounders’ film legend Johnny Chan will be in a field that also includes Todd Brunson, Liz Lieu, J.C Tran, Kenny Tran, John Juanda, Nam Le, Quinn Do, Steve Sung, Huck Seed, Mel Judah, Mansour Matloubi and APT Philippines champion David Saab. All have their eyes on glory and history at Asia’s richest tournament. The buy-in for the main event is USD $5300 ($5000+$300). The event organizers have also extended an open invitation to Olympic megastar and poker nut Michael Phelps. Experts believe that the Vietnamese contingent will be strong and are the ones to watch out for with JC Tran, Kenny Tran, Le, Do and Lieu leading the charge.

The APT Macau is making history by offering US$1.5 million, the largest guaranteed prize pool ever to be offered in Asia, with the first prize also guaranteed at $500,000. Many of the big names are also expected to take part in an exciting HK$1,000,000 high stakes cash game on Friday at the StarWorld, more details of which will be announced in the near future.

Chris Parker, CEO of the Asian Poker Tour said: “ We’re delighted that so many world class names want to be part of the Asian Poker Tour. To have Vegas legends Jack Binion and Doyle Brunson in Macau to kick-off off the tournament is truly significant. Both are pioneers and were around at the start in Vegas and it really says something that they want to mark what we think will herald the start of a poker explosion in Macau. With the presence of online qualifiers from around the world too, the Asian Poker Tour has a very bright future. We’re proud to make history by holding Asia’s biggest guaranteed tournament.”

Joining the stars are players from all over the world who have won seats to the event by qualifying through online satellites at PartyPoker.com, DafaPoker (http://www.dafapoker.com), PKR, Titan Poker (www.titanpoker.com), Bodog (http://www.bodoglife.co.uk), JBet Poker (http://www.jbet.com), Virgin Poker (http://www.virgingames.com/poker), and Poker Trillion (http://www.pokertrillion.com).

David Saab of Australia won the top prize of US$280,000 at the first leg of the Asian Poker Tour in Manila on June 1st. He recently finished 46th in the WSOP® Main Event, winning US$135,100, and hopes to add a second APT championship to his poker accomplishments. The APT has also created a special leaderboard that rewards players who take part in every leg of the tour.

Further details about the APT Macau, including the schedule of events are available on the official website at www.asianpt.com (http://www.asianpt.com).

August 15, 2008

Online poker site puts another 50 Aruba Poker Classic packages on the line this weekend with the goal of sending a record number of players to UltimateBet’s signature event.

For the second time in less than a month, UltimateBet is going all out to share the all-in excitement of the world’s most exciting island poker tournament with as many Texas Hold’em fans as possible. This Saturday, UltimateBet will award at least 50 online poker players with Aruba Poker Classic prize packages valued at $8,500 apiece through its Aruba 50-seat Guarantee.

The $500+30 online Texas Hold’em event begins on Saturday, August 16th at 5:30pm ET at UltimateBet.com. Each package includes a $5,000+500 buy-in to the 2008 Aruba Poker Classic and an additional $3,000 for travel and accommodations.

With several satellites running daily, Texas Hold’em players can still win their way to Saturday’s 50-Seat Aruba Satellite for as little as $10.

The 2008 Aruba Poker Classic takes place from September 27th through October 4th at the Radisson Aruba Resort & Casino. This year’s island tournament has already attracted some of the biggest celebrities from the film, music and poker worlds including Don Cheadle, Scott Ian and Phil Hellmuth.

With more than 750 players expected to play in the Aruba Poker Classic Main Event, UltimateBet is estimating a prize pool of over $4 million and the online poker site is guaranteeing a first place prize of $1 million.

UltimateBet today revealed details of this weekend’s star-studded online poker charity event. The online poker site is partnering with Ante Up For Africa this Friday, Saturday and Sunday with the sole goal of making a dramatic difference in the lives of those affected by the crisis in Darfur, Sudan.

Beginning Friday, August 15th, UltimateBet will host six poker tournaments with all tournament fees being donated to Ante Up For Africa. Slated to play in the tournaments are Don Cheadle, Phil Hellmuth, Annie Duke, Mark “P0ker H0” Kroon, Gary “Debo34” DeBernardi, Shawn Rice, Tiffany Michelle, Cliff “JohnnyBax” Josephy and James “P0KERPR033” Campbell.

If playing with the biggest stars of Hollywood and poker isn’t enough of an attraction, UltimateBet is making each tournament even more enticing by throwing several additional prizes into the mix including: Aruba 100-seat entries for September 13th; UB gear; iAmplify Phil Hellmuth White belt to Black belt courses; AUFA Christian Audigier autographed T-shirts; magazine subscriptions; gas cards; and tournament entries.

In July, UltimateBet introduced several innovative ways for players to make a contribution to the cause using their UltimatePoints.

$250K Up For Grabs In DoylesRoom Super Saturday

August 8, 2008

While Saturday nights are usually reserved for partying, mayhem, and general debauchery, poker fans will be too busy for even casual daytime shuteye, as DoylesRoom.com starts the party early with the hottest Hollywood stars and monumental poker legends in what is shaping up to be the biggest Saturday poker event anywhere.

Doylesroom.com today announced their biggest tournament since returning to the U.S. market earlier this year. DoylesRoom’s Super Saturday $250,000 Guaranteed Tournament not only lets poker buffs join their buddies and an all-star cast to compete for a share of $250K in cold hard cash in an affordable and lucrative event, but also tosses in a particularly rewarding bounty-twist.

The Super Saturday $250,000 Guaranteed Tournament elevates the excitement experienced each week in DoylesRoom’s bounty tournaments—where, every Wednesday at 9:30 pm EST, challengers compete against renowned poker pros and take home massive cash rewards when they eliminate key players from the tournament.

On Saturday, September 27th at 4:00 p.m. ET pokers players will want to fire up their PCs, log on, and battle poker icon Doyle Brunson and several of his closest friends, including Shannon Elizabeth, Mike Caro, Hoyt Corkins, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, TJ Cloutier, and Nikki Hilton, in the epic Texas Hold’em battle of the season.

For a rock-bottom buy-in of only $150+15 entrants can not only take a shot at the $50,000 top prize, but they can also experience the excitement of mingling and competing against the stars for added cash. While competing sites are content to refund buy-ins when players strike out key players in a bounty contest, DoylesRoom is placing a towering $1,000 bounty on each of their ten celebrity heads.

The rewards are massive and nearly without risk, since players can even satellite their way to the explosive main event for as little as $1.65.

Registration for the biggest Saturday tournament in poker is already underway at http://www.doylesroom.com/promotions/super.saturday/

His books, especially Super System and Super System II, are considered the most authoritative sources on playing and winning at poker. Fans and players will be able to meet him and get their copies personally signed at APT Macau.

Doyle Brunson is a legendary American poker player who has played professionally for over fifty years. Nicknamed “Texas Dolly”, he has seen it all – from the early beginnings of poker in the United States to the sudden surge of the game’s popularity during the last decade. He is currently in a tie for second place on the all-time winners list with ten World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelets – just one behind first-placer Phil Hellmuth. His live tournament winnings at present exceed USD $5,300,000.

Like Doyle, his son Todd is also a professional poker player. Todd, who did not learn the game until he was in law school, has been playing in both cash games and tournaments for the last two decades. Nicknamed “Darkhorse”, he also has a WSOP bracelet of his own, making the Brunsons the only father-son combination in history to have won WSOP bracelets. His live tournament winnings presently exceed USD $3,200,000.

Top Asian Poker Pros Look Forward to APT Macau

July 24, 2008

David Saab finishes in the money at the WSOP – Macau is next!

The list of renowned poker pros participating in the Macau leg of this year’s Asian Poker Tour (APT) has just gotten longer.

With 2008 APT Philippines champion David Saab already placing 46th at the World Series of Poker and confirming his participation in the main event of APT Macau, four big-name poker pros of Asian lineage have been added to the list of players looking for a chance to win big at the upcoming tournament in late August. They are J.C. Tran, Nam Le, Quinn Do, and Steve Sung – the latter three pros returning for another shot after coming up short in the APT Philippines main event.

Of the four, J.C. Tran may be the most prominent poker player at present. A Vietnamese-American living in Sacramento, J.C. is currently the top-ranked player on the Bluff Magazine/ESPN power rankings. After starting out by playing in local card rooms, he has become well-respected in the poker world. He has topped various poker tournaments and has total winnings of more than $6.7 million to date. His most recent victory was at Event #49 of the 39th World Series of Poker 2008, where he won $631,170 for placing first. He’ll be looking to leave Macau with yet another title under his belt.

At only 25, Vietnamese-American Nam Le is already considered by many to be a major threat at live tournaments. He will be out for redemption after his early exit at the APT Philippines main event. Nam already has a couple of first place finishes under his belt – the 2006 Bay 101 Shooting Star WPT Championship and the 2006 Scotty Nguyen Poker Challenge II, as well top place finishes in several WSOP and WPT events. His most recent finish was at 4th at the 2008 LA Poker Classic WPT Championship where he earned $411,770.00. Le’s total winnings to date exceed $4.3 million.

Quinn Do, on the other hand, fared much better at APT Philippines. He finished 20th overall and won $7,500 in prize money. He will be looking to top that accomplishment by grabbing first place at APT Macau. Quinn decided to play poker full time in 2004 after his time at the University of Washington and after dabbling in the restaurant business. Since turning pro, Do has been a regular at major live poker events and has won a WSOP Gold Bracelet at the 2005 WSOP Limit Hold’em Event. Other notable finishes by the Vietnam-born Do includes a 2nd place finish at the Bellagio Challenge Cup Championship in 2005 and most recently, a 2nd place finish at the 2008 LA Poker Classic WPT Championship where he went home with $909,400.00. Quinn Do’s total poker winnings to date are close to $2 million.

Like Nam Le, Korean-born Steve Sung will be looking to do better than his early finish at APT Philippines. While still lacking a major tournament title, he has been a top placer in several World Poker Tour (WPT) and World Series Of Poker (WSOP) events, his best finish being second place in the recent 2008 Bay 101 Shooting Star WPT Championship. Before playing at live tournaments, Sung has been an avid online poker player under the moniker ‘MuGGyLiCiOuS”. To date, his total poker winnings amount to over $1.4 million.

APT Macau, the second leg of the 2008 Asian Poker Tour, will be held at the Galaxy StarWorld Hotel and Casino in Asia’s gambling mecca from August 27 to 31, 2008. The APT is home to Asia’s largest guaranteed prize pool with $1,500,000 in cash. The winner of APT Macau is guaranteed at least $500,000, which is sure to attract the top poker players from all over the world.

The buy-in for the Macau leg of this year’s APT is set at $5300 ($5000+$300). Players can also win seats to the event by qualifying through various online satellites. After the Macau leg, the Tour moves on to South Korea and Singapore where even more poker action awaits.

WSOP Academy To Make LA Debut September 6-7 At The Bicycle Casino

July 23, 2008

Poker pros Annie Duke, Kenny Tran, Alex Outhred and poker tells expert Joe Navarro to lead two-days of in-depth instruction

One $5,000 seat to WSOP Circuit Event of choice to be awarded in private tournament

The World Series of Poker Academy, poker’s premier series of instructional schools where participants learn first-hand from the world’s greatest poker players, announced today details for its first-ever event in Los Angeles. Scheduled for September 6 and 7 at The Bicycle Casino, the two-day, comprehensive poker school and experience will feature world-class instruction by WSOP bracelet winner Annie Duke, 2008 WSOP Heads-Up World Champion Kenny Tran, acclaimed poker tells expert Joe Navarro, noted poker professional and instructor Alex Outhred and many, many more.

“The WSOP Academy is coming off another amazing summer at the World Series of Poker that  saw one of our Academy grads again at a final table just days after attending our camp. And we’re now excited to offer our first academy experience in Los Angeles and welcome 2008 WSOP bracelet winner Kenny Tran, one of LA’s most noted poker professionals, to our family of instructors,” said Brandon Rosen of Post Oak Productions, the company that produces the WSOP Academy.

“Like all of our WSOP Academy events, our Los Angeles event will give players the confidence and skills they need to be a threat at the table, whether they’re playing in a home game with friends or at the World Series of Poker against the best in the game.”

The WSOP Academy Los Angeles event will provide participants with in-depth seminars, live hand demonstrations, interactive workshops and customized handbooks while covering all aspects of No-Limit Texas Hold ‘em strategy, from playing position and calculating pot odds to the importance of aggression and changing gears.

The upcoming WSOP Academy event will also mark the first speaking appearance in Los Angeles for acclaimed poker tells expert Joe Navarro. After 25 years with the FBI, working in the areas of counterintelligence and counterterrorism, Navarro has become one of the foremost authorities on reading the nonverbal communications that people exhibit when they are lying. Applying his expertise to poker, Joe has revolutionized the science of detecting and interpreting tells and is eager to share his knowledge with WSOP Academy participants.

“I look forward to working with WSOP Academy students in Los Angeles to help them see inside their opponents and change the way they view the game,” said Navarro. “I plan on spending time working with players individually and spotting tells that they are giving off at the table. I truly believe that this type of personalized attention can save a player a lot of money in the long run.”

Beyond just delivering the best in poker instruction, the WSOP Academy Los Angeles event will also offer a total-immersion poker experience that gives participants the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hang out and play poker with many of the biggest names in the game. Among the highlights include a private poker tournament held at the end of the first day in which participants battle it out for $5,000 seat to the WSOP Circuit event of their choice and other prizes.

“The Academy’s tournament is an exciting way for our participants to put into action what they’ve learned over the day and test their wits at the table against the world’s best like Annie Duke and Kenny Tran,” said Rosen.

The WSOP Academy Los Angeles event is the latest in the groundbreaking series of poker camp programs presented by the WSOP Academy. From sessions that focus on all aspects of No-Limit Texas Hold ‘em to special editions like the WSOP Academy Main Event Primer and WSOP Academy H.O.R.S.E. Edition, the WSOP Academy offers amateur poker players of all skill levels the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn directly from the champions of the game, and for one recent graduate, to become a champion herself. Sally Boyer, a Utah woman who attended the first ever WSOP Academy Ladies Event in 2007, went from camp participant one day to world champion the next when she beat out the largest field ever assembled for a ladies-only event to win the 2007 World Championship Ladies Event.

The cost of the WSOP Academy Los Angeles event is $1,499. Space is limited to 100 participants, and the event is expected sell out well in advance. Additional details for this event and all other Academy events are available at www.wsopacademy.com or by calling 1-800-989-WSOP.
